What is an NAC?

A Nursing Assistant-Certified (NAC) is a person who has successfully completed a Washington State-approved training program and has then passed the National Nurse Aid Assessment Program (NNAAP) Examination in Washington State. The BBCC Nursing Assistant program is a Washington State approved program and prepares students to provide basic nursing care to patients throughout the life-span under the supervision of licensed health care professionals.

NAC's are able to work in a variety of settings including extended care facilities, residential care facilities, medical offices and hospitals. Employment opportunities are numerous as the health care industrycontinues to expand throughout the world. NAC employment provides work flexibility and opportunities for personal growth.

What is involved in becoming an NAC?

The Nursing Assistant Program is one quarter long. It includes lecture, skills lab and direct patient care under the supervision of clinical nursing instructor.
The nursing assistant lecture and skills laboratory courses are held at the Big Bend Community College Health Education Department of the 1700 building.

How is the Nursing Assistant Program a "Stepping Stone" to my future?

Successful completion of the program prepares the student to take the National Nurse Aid Assessment Program (NNAAP) test in Washington State. Successful completetion of the examination allows for both gainful employment as a NAC and meets the NAC certification requirement for application into the Big Bend Community College Level I Associated Degree Nursing (ADN) program. Completion of the Level I (ADN) courses with the addition of the optional summer quarter also allows the student to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing. This educational ladder concept provides an opportunity for the student to begin in the NAC program and advance through the Licensed Practical Nursing and Associate Degree Nursing programs.
